Two years ago, Richard Hutton (Old Grey Class of 2003), Warren Furniss, and Mirko Pineda took on the challenge of running the Old Grey Football Club.
Under their stewardship, Old Grey Football Club has experienced remarkable growth, particularly within its junior ranks spanning from under 7 to under 13, now boasting a total of 28 teams. This expansion has been greatly facilitated by the support of several outstanding sponsors.
In a bold move last year, the trio decided to secure status in the highly competitive Hollywood Bets Regional League, the esteemed 4th tier in South African Football. This league attracts players ranging from 16 to 38 years old. Leading the charge for the Toshiba Old Grey Team is a seasoned coaching staff, Head Coach Wayne Iveson, Assistant Coach Luigi Ciarrocchi, and Team Manager Nicholas Myataza, each bringing with them a wealth of experience garnered from years within the football coaching and playing fraternity.
The Hollywood Bets Regional League, comprising 17 professional teams, demands a rigorous schedule of home and away matches. Against this backdrop, Toshiba Old Grey exhibited great promise, clinching victory in the league with an impressive record of P32 W24 D4 L4, amassing a staggering 76 points. Not only are these results a testament to their exceptional performance throughout the season, but they also mark a historic milestone as the first team to claim the league title in their inaugural season.
Now, as champions, the team is set to embark on a new challenge: the ABC Motsepe playoffs in Butterworth, scheduled for the end of June. This represents a prestigious opportunity for Old Grey, as the ABC Motsepe League stands as the revered 3rd tier of South African Football. Securing a place in this league would be a crowning achievement for the Old Grey Football community.
