A Memorable Day of Cricket at Ashford Oval
On Thursday, October 3rd, Ashford Oval played host to an unforgettable day of cricket as we celebrated the annual Bill McAdam T20 Shield. This year’s event was particularly special, as it marked what would have been the 80th birthday of the late Bill McAdam. The Grey community gathered, alongside the McAdam family, to honour his memory.
The day kicked off with the 1st XI facing off against the Old Boys in their traditional annual match. The Old Boys set a challenging total of 157 all out, with Elton Meire leading the charge with a superb 69 runs. On the bowling front, Tristan Grundling was the standout for the school, taking a fantastic 4 wickets for 20 runs to help keep the Old Boys’ total in check.
In response, the 1st XI got off to a solid start but ultimately fell short of the required run rate. Despite some resilient batting, including a commendable knock of 55 from Xander Elkington, the School ended their innings on 112 for 8, leaving them 45 runs behind the Old Boys’ total. Ben Maree, with figures of 3 for 12, was the pick of the bowlers for the Old Boys, who maintained tight control throughout the chase. The 1st XI are still searching for their first win in this fixture, and this year’s loss added to that tally.
The weather was absolutely perfect for the occasion, with plenty of sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere for the gathered friends, family, and spectators. The day was made even more special by the presence of Geoff Dakin, a longtime friend of Bill McAdam and a former cricket teammate. Geoff generously donated a collection of paintings to Ashford Oval. We were also delighted to have Brian ‘Porky’ Connor in attendance.
In the second fixture of the day, the Old Boys extended their winning streak, securing a four-wicket victory over the SWD Academy XI, capping off a successful and enjoyable day of cricket.
A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone involved in making this event happen – from the players and coaches to the spectators and volunteers. The Grey Bill McAdam T20 Shield remains a cherished occasion for both the McAdam family and the Grey community, a day where the spirit of cricket, family, and friendship come together in celebration.
