I have been presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the 400km Iconic Challenge Charity Run & was selected as 1 of 12 South African ultramarathon runners to participate in the Run.
The Iconic Challenge is a 8-day charity run taking place in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa from 14 July to 21 July 2024 in which the runners will follow the Resistance and Liberation Heritage Route on our epic adventure.
Each of the 12 runners will run the 400km Charity Run over the 8 days, starting with 42km daily x 7 days, followed by the 103km ICON’s ultramarathon on Sunday 21 July (the longest single day ultramarathon in South Africa).
The 400km Iconic Challenge Charity Run is considered to be the ultimate challenge for extreme distance runners, with each kilometre being run for a worthy cause. This charity run starts in the town of Alice and finishes 7 days later in Mthatha.
Each day, after we have completed the day’s run, the 12 runners and the support crew will visit local schools and clinics to deliver and hand over school shoes, food, sanitary pads and sporting equipment to the children in these areas.
The Eastern Cape is one of the most impoverished geographies in South Africa and it is my personal dream to make a difference in this area.
The Iconic Challenge is an event I have dreamed about to participate in, and my selection this year has deeply touched and humbled me.
My late Father grew up in the area and I had, as a child, visited some of the towns we will be running through.
The Iconic Challenge receives extensive media and social media coverage (including daily TV & radio broadcasts) leading up to, and during the event, and is widely recognized as a charity-based event which makes a real difference to the youth of the Eastern Cape.
