Guy Crichton ’96 excels in Triathlon

Old Grey is proud of Guy Crichton ’96 who has triumphed in the Men’s 45 – 49 age category this past year. Winning the men’s 45 – 49 category not just once, but three times, is an incredible testament to discipline, dedication and perseverance.

At the South African Championships Olympic/ Standard Distance race, Guy won his age group and was selected to represent South Africa at the World Triathlon Short Course Champs in Spain and the World Triathlon Long Course Champs in Australia later his year. Unfortunately, Guy is unable to attend either of these due to family and work commitments. However, by winning his age group at IRONMAN South Africa, Guy has secured the elusive slot to race and will be participating in the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in October 2024.

Ironman Africa Championships also took place in PE on 21st April and am sure that a host of Old Greys took part. I know of Nicholas Hafner ’93 who endured a gruelling day off the back of an injury and he persevered to run the red carpet – his time 14:25:48. An inspiring effort my Nic!  I also enjoyed a great day out and won the 45-49 Age Group category by 32 minutes, in a time of 10:18:53.  It was a tough day out there with rough seas and a strong easterly wind – it’s an event that tests your mind, body and spirit and one that bring perspective to your “why” in life.

Guy’s most recent victory was Ironman 70.3 in Durban which took place on June 2nd. Guy won the 45-49 Age Group in a time of 4:37:46.
