Cape Town Old Greys thrash Wynberg counterparts

Do not be misled by the headline for it was only a one-point victory but the result was never in doubt! This bi-annual golfing afternoon against Wynberg Old Boys was held on Friday afternoon at the Mowbray Golf Club ahead of the recent Derby Weekend. The two teams competed for the Clark Trophy. In total 68 golfers took to the field – 34 from each side and it was an exceptional day of good weather, fine camaraderie and good fellowship.

Our Old boys were efficiently gathered together by Lee Carelse ’13 and ably assisted by Keith Clark ’72. The latter has relocated to Port Elizabeth but is still actively involved in local Old Grey affairs. And such is his enthusiasm that he also participated in the day and canvassed widely for prizes! Jannie De Waal, the former Head of Wynberg Boys High, galvanised his own players into action and spent the afternoon on a caddy car checking on the well-being of the players and finalising the scores.

The golf was really played in fantastic spirit of fun friendship and fraternity. Old Grey won by a narrow point so the matches were all very tight which created a very nice competitive spirit with lots of banter.

Jannie De Waal and his Wynberg counterparts did an amazing job to make us all enjoy the days proceedings on  a fantastic golf course in superb weather.

Machiel van Olst ’94 of King Pie very kindly sponsored the golf shirts for the Old boy team. The traditional bright blue colour with an Old Greys’ Union logo was a much-appreciated gift. Thank you Machiel for your support! By the same token, Jannie contributed much in a similar vein with other prizes and it was a very convivial prize-giving that ended the afternoon. A special thanks is also due to Candy Bubb who has long been involved in the organization of events for the Old Grey Cape Town Committee for arranging the set up in the Club House, allocating the shirts and seeing off the field. Nothing like having an Old Collegiate girl on board and may this event long continue!
